This isn’t a one-afternoon job. Plan for weeks, not hours. And always, always have a human reviewing AI outputs before they go to customers, at least for the first few months.
Pitfall 3: Forgetting About Data Privacy and Security
AI tools need data to work. Often, lots of it. That means your customer information, your financial data, your business secrets – all potentially going through someone else’s system.
This isn’t theoretical. In 2023, Samsung banned staff from using ChatGPT after employees accidentally leaked sensitive data, including source code and internal meeting notes. None of that requires cutting-edge technology. It just requires the discipline to treat AI like any other business investment — with proper planning, clear success criteria, and a willingness to walk away if the numbers don’t stack up.
AI isn’t magic. But it’s also not a mystery. Apply the same rigour you’d apply to hiring a new member of staff or opening a new location, and you’ll be ahead of most businesses that are currently buying first and asking questions later.

- Can I describe the problem this solves in one sentence?
- Do I know how I’ll measure whether it’s working?
- Have I calculated the true cost, including time?
